Southwest Montana Lewis & Clark
Bicentennial Committee Meeting Minutes
Silver Star, Montana
June 3, 2004

Judy Siring called the meeting to order at 11:15 AM. Those in attendance were: Kit Mather, Katie Bump, Jim Boetticher, JoAn Juliano, Judie Tillman, Cameron Clark, Deb Bradley, Judy Siring.

The minutes of the April 2, 2004, meeting were approved as presented.

Lewis & Clark Showcase:Judy Siring is the only member planning to attend. She will be reimbursed for registration, meals & mileage. She plans to stay with relatives. She will also represent the group at the State Commission and Regional meeting that will be held in conjunction with the Showcase.

Corps II Report: Corps II will be in Dillon Aug. 5-8, 2005. Judy S. reported that Carol McBryant will be in Dillon on 6/7/04 to look at the site and give her approval. Anyone wishing to join the group going to the Fairgrounds can meet @ Judy’s office at 9:00AM. There will need to be 32 of programs at the “Tent of Many Voices”. Need to have local presentations from the counties that give a flavor of the history and culture from pre-Lewis & Clark through present. Judy would like the County’s to be thinking about what they would like to emphasize and how to best do it.

Also discussed was the potential for other events in the area to coincide with Corps II- before, during, after.

Flight of Discovery: The Flight of Discover is a group of general aviation pilots that are flying the Lewis & Clark Trail. They will land at the Twin Bridges Airport on June 10th just before noon. Twin will welcome them, serve refreshments, and exchange memorabilia. Deb Bradley suggested that if anyone had items that they might wish to give to the crew, they could forward them to her. Also if you wish to attend you are invited.

MB>Madison County Fairgrounds Interpretive Park: Deb reported that the park is almost done and they are planning a “Grand Opening” celebration on June 26th. The Bronze will be installed and all the exhibits complete. The park sounds wonderful and everyone praised Twin Bridges for working together to accomplish this feat. Everyone is invited to the celebration. They are also inviting dignitaries and plan to have a fun-filled day.

Interpretive Signs: The Madison County sign has received approval from NPS and the MTDOT. Kit still is waiting on the high resolution photos before it can go to fabrication. Otherwise its ready. The Jefferson Co. sign is complete except for a map that Cameron is getting. Once this is added, it can be sent to Laurie at NPS for approval. It will go on private ground so MDOT approval is not necessary. Jim brought information and the design for the Beaverhead Co. sign he will work with Kit to get it ready to go in for approvals.

Judie stressed she needs to report match. This is a 1:1 match grant so we need to document everyone’s time, mileage. Please remember to provide your match information. You can e-mail or bring to next meeting.

Passport Distribution: Jim reported that everyone (groups) that have requested passports has received them. He did not have a break-out of income received and expenses at this time. That will be provided at a later date and sent to the Committee.

Other Events: The need/possibility of other events was mentioned under the Corps II discussion. The group felt it would be good to kick off L&C’s entry into our area with a Birthday Party for Clark on Aug. 1, 2005. He was camped near LaHood at that time. Cameron, Kit & Judie spoke to the need to get a planning committee together in Jefferson Co. to work on this. Other events are possible as they traveled toward to the Dillon area. An ideal spot would be the new interpretive park & fairgounds in Twin. And then in 2006 as Clark’s group came back through the Big Hole perhaps something in that area. Now is the time to start planning for 2 reasons. 1) we need to have dates etc. for the 2005 Passport by January and 2) time goes fast and if you want to obtain speakers, performers, etc. you need to get them soon.

Also discussed was an idea to have local media highlight what L&C were doing on a weekly basis and what L&C events/attractions are taking place in the area that people can attend/visit.

Next meeting: Sept. 16, 2004 in Twin Bridges.

Meeting Adjourned 12:45 PM.
