Lewis & Clark Trail Bicentennial Commission of L&C County
Commission members present: Clete Daily, Terry Peck, Bob Henkel, Sharon Haugen, Marv Holtz, Rita Blouke and Dick Alberts. Associate member present: Amy Teegarden. There not being a quorum, President Alberts called the meeting to order in Executive session.
September 24, 2003
Without objection, the minutes of the August meeting were approved as printed. The in-kind document was passed around.
Sharon reported that we have $841.80 in the checking account and $7799.04 in savings. We have paid I.O. $2264 and $8000. We have $600 to be deposited from prints and a $300 bill from the IR. We are getting $10,000 from the NPS for Devil's Elbow signage.
Correspondence: Three letters from the State Commission about Corps II – July 9-17, 2005; about closing out the 2002 Encampment grant; and about an extension date of July 31, 2004 for the Devil’s Elbow grant; fundraising pig calendar; a packet of brochures for the L&C Training Academy; a hard copy of the I.O. proposal; an advertisement from the L&C web site; a “Youth Discover the L&C Expedition” card from the Historical Society; information about the L&C coin medallions; web site information from OPI and the Missouri Historical Society.
Brochures: We only have about 50 brochures left. Dick will take them to Lewistown. We sent St. Regis all the rest. Bob will contact sponsors and Gold West through the Chamber. Marv will check with the canyon folks. Twenty thousand will cost $3500. Clete has a few of the card packets left.
Terry reported that Mark can not attend the Corps II meeting in Lewistown. Clint will set up a meeting with Carol McBryant.
Great Northern: Clete, Sharon and Dick met last week with the architect for the GN. They decided to subcontract for the signage. They will meet from 9-12 tomorrow (Sept. 26) at the DT office to interview designers and to decide about the contract. They have approval for the well for the GF diorama. They will talk with Gary about consulting money for the Commission.
Devil’s Elbow: I.O. met with Dick and Amy. First draft is in. We need to make sure they are getting the support they need from the Commission to complete their work in a timely manner. Dick will check with them to see if they are comfortable with being where they want to be.
Morgan print: Amy will check with the jerky plant in Lincoln to see if they need more prints to sell. Bob asked about ads for the holiday season. After discussion it was decided to wait until the October meeting to decide but probably we would not want more than one ad. Clete suggested we put some advertising at the bank. The Summit Club wants a program on L&C trips in March.
Dick met with Ron Mercer and they would like L&C signage at the terminal expansion. Bob volunteered to work with them. Bob suggested we look at the IR and Montana Magazine web site for sponsorship and ideas. Amy suggested that the NF video should be available by then and we could include a video and loop footage.
Dick reported that the September 14 meeting was primarily for information sharing. Money continues to be problematic for all groups. There were questions about how to provide signage for the corridor. Steve Kubick wants to discuss it at the regional meeting. Without objection, the resolution for Tower Rock was approved. Dick will sign and send it out.
Dick and Amy will attend the regional commission meeting. Clete might go.
Amy asked about the Open House information. She has been contacted by Al from the Elk Foundation, the Montana City students, and What A Window. Dick asked if we still wanted to pursue an intern from Carroll. General consensus was that it would be helpful.
If anyone has comments about the draft for signage at the GOTM road from Undaunted Stewardship, let Tom Daubert know. Bob said the construction should start next year. Dick will send Tom an email about talking with the county (Eric Griffith) about the road construction plans.
The next meeting will be October 22.
