MONTANA AND IDAHO LEWIS AND CLARK EXCHANGE - 9/8/05
“The exchange of the spear-like weapon carried by members of the Corps of Discovery signifies the conclusion of Montana’s 2005 bicentennial observance; however, statewide activities will resume next June in Missoula,” Montana Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commission Executive Director Clint Blackwood said. The noon ceremony next Wednesday (Sept. 14) is the culmination of a two-day event at the Lolo Pass Visitor Center that begins on Sept. 13 with a flag raising ceremony and includes an 1805 military encampment, living history interpretive programs and U.S. Postal Service pictorial cancellation with cacheted envelops. Lewis and Clark officials from both states, representatives of the National Park Service and the U.S. Forest Service will participate. “We want to acknowledge the experienced re-enactors and the NPS for all their time and effort in Montana this summer and we’re encouraged and excited they will return to Montana on the eastward trip in 2006,” Blackwood said. Numerous activities are planned next year, including a commemorative Blackfeet event, the “Clark on the Yellowstone” signature event next July in the Billings area, and seven Montana communities will host the traveling NPS Corps II educational venue that served thousands across Montana this summer.
